About
The Herald Building
The Calgary Herald Building on Stephen Avenue stands as one of the city's most enduring architectural landmarks. Constructed from 1883–1887, the handsome two-storey sandstone block was built as the Herald's first purpose-built home, designed to reflect the ambitions of a rapidly growing city.
The building's craftsmanship and sturdy sandstone construction have allowed it to endure well over a century of Calgary's transformation, outlasting countless structures that once surrounded it. Remarkably, it still stands today at 113 8th Ave SW, a rare and tangible link to Calgary's earliest days.
Lovingly restored to its original appearance in 2003, the building serves as a proud reminder of the pioneering spirit that defined Calgary in its formative years, and continues to anchor Stephen Avenue as a symbol of the city's rich heritage. Today, it is also home to FinePrint — one of Calgary's premier local restaurants.
